We do not currently have a facility but are working on getting one. Our Light Up the Night Fundraiser will help with this.
Yes.
The state of Texas does not require that we have a certification to operate a private transitional housing unit. However, some government grant programs do have certain standards that must be met to qualify for funding. As we continue to diversify our funding sources, we will begin to implement strategies to meet those standards. We also plan to become members of the Texas Council for Family Violence that helps to meet those standards as well.
We currently have partners that complement the services we will provide in the future. Our focus at this time as we build out our transitional housing is to foster a sense of community and support women who may be experiencing domestic violence. Therefore, we have events that include monthly restorative yoga with Sandy Soul Yoga and self defense classes with Team OMA Jiujitsu. And every Tuesday, we have a book club meeting at Splendid Sun Books. Beginning in October, we will offer group counseling for grief, trauma, and abuse with a licensed clinical social worker (LCSW).
We've established internal controls that require the signature of the President and Treasurer. Each month at our board meetings, the Treasurer gives a report, which includes all statements and financial transactions for the previous month. Our current biggest expenses are the Fulton Convention Center for the gala and our rent. Both have been paid in full by the money from our generous donors.
Federal requirements are that an external audit must happen with budgets of $750,000 or more. We haven't reached that point yet.
The only other domestic violence shelter that we are aware of in the Coastal Bend area is the Purple Door, and their shelters are located in Corpus Christi. In Victoria, there's Midcoast Family Services that has a crisis center and Perpetual Help House. We are also aware of Charlie's Place in Corpus, which is a rehab center, and Rainbow House, which is a homeless shelter for women and children in Corpus. Our transitional housing will specifically support women who are victims of domestic violence and/or sexual assault. There is no shelter of the sort in the Aransas County/Rockport/Aransas Pass area that we are aware of. Yet the need is great.
